En Route

Summary: Chris is getting ready for the visit to Darren’s for the release of Prisoner of Azkaban.

Chris’ room looks temporarily like a hurricane had hit it. His duffel bag is on the bed, a few T-shirts handing off the side of it and a bunch of his clothes strewn over the comforter. Books are on about every other surface along with notebooks and a couple of pencils and pens, some on the floor where they rolled off when he wasn’t paying attention.

It shouldn’t be a big deal but somehow it is. He’s visiting Darren and it might be for just one night but it’s the first time he’s gone to someone else’s house. Or at least it’s the first time he’s going to stay with someone who is not family. They’re leaving right after school on Friday and Chris wants to just grab his bag and go. He’s not even considering delays, hoping that Hannah will be just as ready to go, even though her reason to drive up to San Fran is nowhere near as pleasant as his.

And it’s not only Darren that’s making him all impatient, even though he has to admit to himself that Darren’s definitely a big part of it. But in just a few hours, he’ll have the new book in his hands. The money is nicely stacked on his desk, the previous books on top of it to keep it safe.

"Chris, it’s time to sleep!"

"Yes Mom, I’m almost done," he calls back and finally settles on the dark blue T-shirt that makes him think of Ravenclaw colors.

Just one more night of sleep and he’ll be on the way to meet Darren.

I Made a Friend

I made a friend.

Chris is scribbling random patterns on the notebook around the one sentence he managed to write down almost an hour earlier, in an attempt to start a diary… no, a journal, diaries are for girls, he chastises himself. The few words on the paper fascinate him, like they’re some sort of miracle. And in a way they are, because he’d never made a genuine friend in school, always on the sidelines, always picked last, always more likely to be alone in the school’s library or a remote corner at recess with a book than playing dodgeball or whatever the latest craze was.

How long did it take you to finish the book? I’m afraid to tell you how fast I read it, because you might feel like I’m showing off again! But we did agree I’m the faster reader, so maybe I should tell you I was finished that same evening? It’s a long drive from San Francisco to Clovis and nothing to see out the window except cows.

I’m glad I talked Mom into bringing me along, though, because otherwise I still wouldn’t have the book and we wouldn’t have met. But mostly, I’d still be waiting for the book! Our library and our local shop decided it’s not important enough (!!!) to get the book when it was released and special orders take a few weeks. A FEW WEEKS! So that’s why I asked Mom if I could come with her. She was bringing Hannah (my little sister) to the hospital and I came along because I couldn’t wait any longer. And it was my birthday present. A pretty awesome one, actually.
I’ll need more paper to write down all my favorite parts. There’s so much I loved about this one, almost more than Sorcerer’s Stone, but only almost. Nothing beats book one. It will always be my favorite because it’s where it all started. And it had a dragon. But we didn’t get to discuss the car because Mom came to pick me up. THE CAR, Darren! How amazing was that? I would probably stop and think before flying it, but then, who wouldn’t want to fly a car? That was crazy and cool!
The Polyjuice Potion was one of my top parts, too. I don’t think anyone could get away with the excuse you said to Snape, he’d make you come to class and keep away the antidote. I wish Hermione didn’t get the wrong hair, but then Ron and Harry would have gotten everything too fast. And this way we got Lockhart being hit by his own curse. In case it wasn’t clear: I do NOT like Lockhart. At all. It’s not OK to steal someone else’s ideas or stories. Never ever. I have stories I want to write and I would never forgive anyone if they stole them.
Do you think they’ll ever make movies from the books? If they hurry up, maybe I’d get to be cast in it. I could be Ron, I mean, I’m sure Mom would let me dye my hair red. And then maybe you could be Oliver? But you’d have to be really good at sports and catching, because Oliver is the best Keeper ever! Did you figure out that the monster was a snake?
If they ever do make a movie, I hope they keep the spiders out. That part was creepy. Good, but really scary. I’m totally with Ron on the spider thing - why can’t it have been butterflies? Or, I don’t know, something a little smaller than Aragog. I’d take a dragon, maybe the music thing works on him like it did on Fluffy and I could sing him to sleep. I don’t think it would work on ALL THOSE SPIDERS!
I have to go, Mom’s calling for dinner and I want to send this to you soon. I’m hoping we can talk more, it’s really a lot more fun having someone to talk to about the books. And think about it, it’s not even that long until the next one! I hope they get it in the library or the shop here on time. I wonder what happens in it. Mom checked for me and said it’s called Prisoner of Azkaban. There are a lot prisoners there, right? Any ideas who it could be?
I would really like to go to San Francisco again, I’ll have to ask Mom when she’s bringing Hannah again. I don’t think she would allow me to stay for a sleepover, but if I can’t get the next book here, I hope your uncle will have enough copies so I don’t miss out. Do you think there will be a book for each year? And that there will be one every year? A YEAR, Darren, imagine waiting that long for a book? I don’t think I can.
You like Lockhart, I don’t know if we can be friends anyway, even if you’re the only person I can talk to about Harry Potter. I’m joking! Just don’t stare at me like that if we get to read together again, that was a little creepy. And the books are so much more interesting anyway.
I hope you’ll write back again, I like being pen pals with you, I never had one before.

So I finished the book like five minutes ago, and what I want to do more than anything is start reading it all over again. It’s that good. Not gonna lie, when Harry freed Dobby by tricking Lucius into giving him a sock, I may have shed a tear. But just one tear, because I’m not a baby. No matter what Chuck (my big brother) says. Big brothers, man. They are the best…and also the worst. Although I bet you’re an awesome big brother. You’ve just got one little sister, right? I know you mentioned her at the bookstore (I’m not creepy stalking you, I promise…or at least not yet) and that she had an appointment. Is that why you were in San Fran? Just curious, because I’d think that there’d have to be some bookstores closer to Clovis than my uncle’s store is. Not that I’m complaining, because otherwise we wouldn’t have met you and that would seriously suck.
